Global Public Health and Philanthropy with Dr. Flavia Senkubuge

The current pandemic has transformed normal life and our societies so much that it is now widely being described as the greatest crisis in a century. The subsequent lockdown has since highlighted the structural issues plaguing our country including inequality, poverty and the fragility of our public healthcare systems. We are keen to be joined by public health expert, Dr Flavia Senkubuge for an evening in conversation as we discuss the impact public health policies are having on our changing society. 

Dr Flavia Senkubuge is a medical doctor, Public Health Medicine specialist and global public health advocate. Her work is rooted in the African philosophy of Ubuntu, espouses the tenets of philanthropy and centres her passion for mentoring young people.

Dr Senkubuge has done extensive, collaborative work with colleagues throughout the continent and globally around her areas of interests which include global health diplomacy, tobacco control, health policy and management, Leadership, Universal Health Coverage, Sustainable Development Goals and the social determinants of health.

Through her role as Vice-President of the African Federation of Public Health Association, she advocates for and furthers the causes of public health in Africa. As the chair of the WHO African Advisory Council on Research and Development and the president of Women in Global Health South Africa, she leads the charge in advising on matters concerning health research and development on the continent and promoting gender equality within global health leadership respectively. 

She is the first black woman and third woman to hold the position of President of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa, which oversees the postgraduate specialisation of doctors in South Africa. She continues to fulfil her passion for philanthropy through her duties as the executive director of Public Health Africa, a globally supported non-profit organization.
